Orthopedics is a medical discipline that deals with the study, prevention and treatment of diseases of the movement system. The name of the orthopedic comes from the Greek word “orthos” meaning straight, upright and the word “paidon” which means a child! The illustration of a young tree tied to a straight pillar is a true symbol of orthopedics.

Early orthopedics implied correction of the condition most commonly in a child such as scoliosis, paralysis, tuberculosis of the bones, and then congenital deformities such as hip joint and deformity of the foot. Gradual orthopedics involves fractures, dislocation and trauma of the skeleton.
For tenths of years, orthopedics was reduced to the treatment of fracture by manipulating bones and joints, and absolute rest. Hacks, like many others, were considered incurable and ignored. The patient would rest, allowing the fracture to heal, and then he had to adapt the way of life to the newcomer walking difficulties, the impossibility of collapsing, or other difficulties arising from the wrong incarceration.

In the 1930s, screws, wedges and plates were designed to fix broken bone fragments and provide ideal healing. Then a denture was designed, which in time began to replace the damaged joints first of the hip, then the knees, the shoulders, etc. and at the end of almost all the joints. This has led to great progress in raising the quality of people’s lives.

Orthopedics is now a predominantly surgical branch, but it also works closely with conservative branches such as pediatrics, neurology, physical medicine, sports medicine, school medicine and rheumatology. The future of orthopedics is in the hands of fundamental scientific disciplines, and above all in the hands of molecular biology, in the sense of cultured culture of cartilage cells intended for the treatment of degeneratively modified and worn cartilage. Gene therapy in orthopedics is no longer a science fiction, but it is also applied in clinical practice, primarily for hereditary diseases, and then for acquired, degenerative diseases as well as for the treatment of osteoporosis and in general to improve healing of bones and soft tissues.
